The responsibilities of an Iowa Notary Public are critical to the legal, business, financial, and real estate communities in this state. A Notary Public is a person commissioned by the Secretary of State to serve the public as an impartial and unbiased witness by identifying persons who come before the Notary. The most common function of the Notary is to witness and attest that a person signing a document is authentic.

Due to the importance of this work to the state’s business community, all Iowa notaries are encouraged to use this Web site as a resource to stay current on Iowa notary law, find answers to common questions, and to provide guidance for proper recording and administration of the notarial act. For more detailed information, you may always refer to the notary section of the Iowa Code Chapter 9B and rules in 721 – Chapter 43.
